Who am I?

My name is Samuel Séguin and I am a video game designer and programmer.

I’ve always been drawn to anything related to creative media and things that are a little “nerdy.” I love movies, drawing, board games, and music, but video games are by far my greatest passion.

I’ve been playing video games for as long as I can remember and I’ve always known that it was in this field that I would want to work one day.

My background

I started my journey at the Cégep de l’Outaouais, where I did a DEC in computer programming and security, thinking that this would open the most doors for me in the future. However, I quickly realized that this wasn’t really what interested me in life. Working as an IT or web developer seemed like a safe plan, but I found that the creative aspect was usually too lacking in this type of work.

That’s why when I got to college, I decided to move to Montreal to attend a program specifically focused on video games. I earned a bachelor’s degree in video game creation at the University of Quebec in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, with a concentration in game design.

Not only did it allow me to express myself creatively and consolidate my technical skills in computer science, this program also allowed me to develop a particular interest in technical game design and user experience design.

After that, I got my first job in this field at Goose Byte, an independent game studio in Montreal, where I worked as a technical designer and gameplay programmer, initially as an intern and then as a junior employee. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, the studio was forced to lay off most of its employees, including me.

So I am now back on the job market, where I hope to find a new position that will allow me to express my creativity and interest in video games.

My plans for the future

As someone who plays just about every type of game, I would love to have the opportunity to work on AAA game production as much as in more independent studios. Despite the difficulties the video game industry has been facing for some time now, I remain enthusiastic and open to any opportunities that may come my way.

My dream is to not only have the chance to make a living from this passion I have for video games, but also to have the chance to work on games around which players will want to create communities.
